Known as cinnabar lacquer in reference to the colorant that makes them red, works like this exquisite Chinese box were produced by carving into numerous coats of lacquer. By setting figural scenes on a ground of geometric patterns, the artist added contrast and depth to the composition. Emerging here in high relief is one of the Eight Immortals, auspicious mythical beings frequently used as motifs on Chinese lacquer and ceramics.
