American Folk Art from the Permanent Collection and Pilavin Collection of 20th-Century American Art

July 15 - August 15, 1981

Inscribed on the front, "Indian/Translation/Judson" and inside, "Frederic Denison." The box apparently hung on the wall of the First Baptist Church in Westerly, which was founded in 1835. In 1837, Frederic Denison (1819-1901) became pastor of the church. The inscription "Judson" refers to Adoniram Judson (1788-1850) who distinguished himself as an American Baptist missionary in Burma in the first half of the 19th century. The box was used to raise funds for the support of foreign and domestic missions and the printing of religious publications.
