This work is one in a series that artist Bob Dilworth created during a time of great change in his life. Each painting in that series presents a different version of a heart in emotional pain. Dilworth was documenting the stresses of moving across the country, experiencing marital trouble, and raising young children. He explains:

The frames were covered with wallpaper designs to highlight a connection to the complications of domesticity. I also realized around this time that painting was not just about paint. That other material, such as wallpaper, can be added to heighten that experience. The work I’m doing now has grown out of that realization.

Like Dilworth’s more recent work, this painting directly engages both pattern and personal meaning.
