European Galleries

Gilded classical busts and stylized leaf and flower motifs complement the form of this table, which is composed from strong horizontal and vertical elements. Ideal for displaying vases and small sculptures, it was most likely originally part of a suite of furniture. The slightly bowed back suggests a placement against a curved wall.

The table’s maker, the Jacob-Desmalter firm, was Paris’s largest and most fashionable supplier of furniture, and accepted commissions from Napoleon and nobility.
