Ancient Egyptian Galleries

Bluish anhydrite was an especially favored stone for making Middle Kingdom cosmetic jars. Originally bearing a flat disc lid, this jar once held eye paint (kohl) that would have been applied with a long stick. Two seated monkeys, playfully holding hands, decorate the jar's exterior.
