The bold ornamentation of the patchwork jacket and vest contrasts with the more traditional Chinese robes. The costume was probably used for the theater. The artist has exploited the possibilities of applied decoration by piecing together tapestry with brocaded and embroidered fabrics to create a colorful robe. The textiles used for piecing probably date from the eighteenth century.
