Exhibition History

Exhibition History

Asian Art Galleries

Characterized by its curving blade, this dagger is known as a janbiya, a style that was worn primarily in the Arabian Peninsula. A formidable weapon in battle, it also functioned as a symbol of status, signaling rank and prestige for its wearer. The scabbard, or sheath, is intricately carved with floral motifs and inlaid with silver on one side, and inscribed with a verse from the Quran on the other. The decoration was likely exposed to view, while the sacred verse was kept close to the body to protect its wearer.
