Exhibition History

Exhibition History

European Galleries

During the Renaissance, as religious practice started moving beyond churches and into the home, artists began producing smaller objects for domestic use. This plaque—which depicts the death of Jesus’s mother, Mary—may have been created for private devotion.

Silver was mined in Germany and nearby central Europe at the time this plaque was made. German silversmiths were known for their refined work, and benefited from their close proximity to the mines.
