Exhibition History

From the Loom of a Goddess
Reverberations of Guatemalan Mayan Weaving
Feb 23, 2018 – Aug 19, 2018

Label copy

Both the shawl and apron here incorporate jaspe, or tie-dyed threads, creating the hazy effect seen particularly in the white areas of the patterns. Though there is some evidence that ancient Maya weavers experimented with the jaspe process, the practice did not become widespread until the arrival of the Spanish and, with them, trade goods from East and Southeast Asia, an area with a long and rich history of tie-dyed textiles.
