About
Picasso captured the social dynamic between an older man and his solicitous younger companion in this glimpse of Parisian nightlife. The woman’s exuberance contrasts with her partner’s soberness as they partake of an after-theater meal of fruit and champagne. Picasso juxtaposed the pair’s mismatched demeanor with the still-life of the lightly set table. The mirror above the couple and the woman’s patterned robe hanging at upper right emphasize the fleeting nature of their liaison.
