Yeondoo Jung’s Documentary Nostalgia features a succession of typical movie sets-a living room interior, the street, and several idyllic landscapes-in which reconstructions of episodes from the artist’s past take place. The video is shot in a single long take by a static camera, capturing not only the performed action, but also the work “behind the scenes”-the laborious transformation of sets by workers in orange overalls. Unrealistically bright colors, unnatural light and shadows, and simplistic props further reveal the reconstructions’ artificiality, suggesting how reality and fiction are always closely intertwined in both our memories and in the artistic depiction of the world around us.
