Barbara Morgan, a devotee of modern dance, dedicated much of her photography to capturing its new language. Before shooting, Morgan would study the dancer

rehearsing until she understood the structure of the movement, then work with the performer to capture key moments. Doris Humphrey (American, 1895-1958),

who taught at the Juilliard School and the Bennington School of Dance, was particularly interested in the flow of the breath through the body. Even in this static

pose, Morgan captures the drama of the first dance in Humphrey’s New Dance Trilogy.
