East of Bali, the small island of Lembata is situated between Flores and the north of Timor. Signs and symbols of a remote livelihood are rife in the island's traditional textiles, which are woven as bride payments or ceremonial exchange cloths. Locally gathered cotton and indigo and soga dyes are used by the island's Lamaholot people. Abstracted trees, people, and manta rays are depicted in this example's warp ikat bands.
