French
Dress, ca. 1924
Description
About
Vibrant flowers have been appliquéd, or secured with stitches, to the watery-patterned silk fabric of this dress. The choice by the designer to draw the eye to the lower hem with bright flowers is particularly informative for the period. Hemlines of dresses were just beginning to rise in the 1920s, and this gesture would have been seen as a particularly bold decision. Emphasis on the wearer’s lower leg would have signaled liberation and fashion-forward design.
