"I had first photographed Steichen during the Second World War, when he was a Naval Commander. The prospect of portraying such an inventive photographic pioneer was awesome. I was so tense and nervous that the first result was unsatisfactory and I timorously requested a second sitting, to which a patient and understanding Steichen acquiesced. He told me he had feelings similar to mine as a young photographer in pre-World War I France. ‘I got as far as the iron gate near Monet’s chateau,’ Steichen reminisced. ‘The day was hot and my equipment heavy, but I was too in awe even to ring the bell.’

Years later in the 1960s, at his home in Ridgefield, Connecticut, Steichen resembled an Old Testament patriarch."
