About
The pages mounted on Ernesto Pujol’s collage-painting came from his grandmother’s library of devotional books, which he had read growing up and later inherited. Images of Old Testament figures on the yellowing pages, including King David and Job, are accompanied by drawn and painted doves, which refer to specific paintings with religious themes by the Greek master El Greco. In addition, shadowlike sparrows are drawn from the artist’s memories of the birds that populated the monastery where he once lived. By layering devotional texts, art historical sources, and personal motifs, Pujol literally and figuratively merges the past and
present and aesthetic and spiritual experience.
