Carla Fernández

From the spinning of the thread to the weaving of the fabric, these garments were made entirely by hand by Indigenous Tzotzil artisans living and working in San Juan Chamula, Chiapas, Mexico. The hairlike texture of this fabric is a result of the lengthy process of soaking the fabric with mud and then vigorously brushing it. Taller Flora is a workshop / mobile fashion-design laboratory conceived by Mexican fashion designer Carla Fernández. By collaborating with Indigenous women artisans to create sustainable fashion that is inspired by traditional craft processes, Fernández has established a fair-trade network. This collective produces one-of-akind couture-level garments embodied with the soul of community and made according to an established set of environmental standards.
