Heads Up! Recent Gifts to the Collection

July 31, 2015 - January 10, 2016

The drawing seen here belong to a series Jim Dine began in 2008, in which he portrayed his own face staring directly at the viewer. He emphasized the effects of age, including baldness and wrinkles, in exacting detail. Even his rough treatment of the paper’s surface seems to allude to the ravages of time.

Dine ties the practice of drawing to intense observation, and he sees self-portraiture, which he has practiced since the 1960s, as a reflection of his experiences and wisdom—in Dine’s description, “what life has done to the face.”
