Label copy

This print demonstrates artists’ ongoing fascination with the dramatic landscape of the hilltop town of Tivoli near Rome. The American artist George Loring Brown shows no figures at all in his image of the falls, emphasizing instead the steep vertical plunge of the water. Brown’s detailed rendering of the foreground leaves and shrubs suggests that he brings to this well-known place his own firsthand observation.
