The most distinctive feature of the Indian musical system is the codification of its many modes or ragas, each of which was intended to evoke a particular mood. Even more distinctive is the way in which these musical modes were frequently personified in illustrated poetic treatises known as ragamalas (garland of ragas) in which series of related "minor" modes are further personified as the raginis or "wives" of each raga. Shown here is the ragini Purbi (also known as Desha Varadi).
