This multipurpose piece of furniture is not just a bookcase: its center drawer folds out into a writing surface. It features fluted columns, geometric-patterned inlays of different types of wood, and other classical characteristics, such as the modeled figures on the doors. Its shelves are populated with a collection of English ceramic figures, mainly dating from the 1700s. Formed from fine earthenware and typically glazed in brown, green, or ochre, this style is known as Wieldonware after the English potter John Wieldon, whose ceramics were known for their marbleized and tortoiseshell patterns.
