From the 1850s through the 1930s, stereographs (or “stereos”) were ubiquitous in the United States. William Henry Jackson repurposed his photographs of Yellowstone for government survey expeditions as stereos. 'Through these views, the armchair tourist could travel to Yellowstone or elsewhere without leaving his or her living room.
