Buttersworth was born on the Isle of Wight, the son of a marine painter. By the 1850s he had established a reputation in America and was settled in West Hoboken, New Jersey, where the ships in New York Harbor provided subjects for many of his paintings. He was well-known for his skill in painting yachts.
