French watercolors and drawings from the Museum's collection, ca. 1800-1910

Exhibition History

From Dürer to Van Gogh

Label copy

This rapid sketch from life is not directly connected to a particular painting or sculpture, but is rather a preliminary investigation of pose that Matisse might have returned to later. The drawing hung in the historic 1913 Armory Show in New York, the exhibition largely credited with invigorating interest in French art and Modernism in the United States. Mrs. Eliza Radeke purchased this sheet directly from the exhibition. In this, she showed a great willingness to embrace modern art as well as a continued attention to figure studies as appropriate to the educational mission of the RISD Museum.
