Japanese characters create the faces of the figures and also give their names: Ono No Komachi (the only woman) in the center. If she is right side up, the other poets are, clockwise: Ariwara no Narihira, Bun'ya no Yasuhide, The monk Kisen, Otomo no Kuronushis (there is a macron over the first o of Otomo) and Bishop Henjo (there is a macron over the o in Henjo).
