Tradition and Innovation in American Watercolors

January 27 - April 11, 1999

For several years after serving in the US Army, Burchfield's work expressed a more somber note as he turned from depicting nature to documenting the landscape of American towns, often portraying their empty, alienated qualities. Among the industrial subjects painted at this time is Gates Down, a view of the snowy Pennsylvania Railroad crossing in his hometown of Salem, Ohio.

Early Modernism in America

February 24 - April 16, 1995

December 30, 1971 - January 23, 1972
