In this sculpture, Jesus wears a crown of thorns, alluding to his crucifixion, alongside the text “God save the queens.” Foulem’s deliberate use of queens, a term used to describe effeminate gay men and drag queens, juxtaposes Jesus with references to homosexuality. This gallery features depictions of events in the life of Jesus in many mediums, emphasizing the ever-present doctrines of the Catholic church in medieval Europe. With Foulem’s departure from traditional Christian iconography a Queer Jesus emerges, creating new Queer spaces and narratives about salvation.
