I tried to become as versatile in one graphic material as another, so what I could do with ink, I could also do in charcoal or pencil.

The art of Joseph Norman maintains a sense of place, alludes to the complexities of the African American experience, and projects a conviction that life is a long journey. He grew up on Chicago's South Side, has lived in Rhode Island since 1985, and has worked in Costa Rica, Canada, Spain, and Berlin. Norman has frequently taught courses at RISD.
