Marcia Hafif

Green Lake Deep is from a series of works Hafif referred to as “Shade Paintings.” She described the series as an “experiment with adding a bit of black to any given color, producing a ‘shade’ rather than the ‘tint’ that would result with the addition of white.” The color green here achieves a heightened intensity—as well as the chromatic depth alluded to in the title—lending the work a still, contemplative quality. Hafif’s rigorous exploration of color was informed by her concentrated study of Renaissance art in Italy during the 1960s.
