Galerie Bernheim-Jeune, Paris, purchased from the artist 22 November 1916
Sold to Dikran Khan Kélékian 25 November 1916, 2000 francs
Dikran Khan Kélékian, New York, 1923
The Lucerne partner company of Kunsthandlung Böhler, Kunsthandel AG, bought the painting as “Stilleben am Fenster” from Dikran Khan Kélékian in 1923, passed it on to the Berlin branch of Kunsthandlung Böhler. Cassirer involved in transaction as per back of the card painting was at "20.6.23 bei Cassirer Berlin.” Presumably Kunsthandel AG ( the partner company of Kunsthandlung Böhler in Lucerne), Koenigs and Cassirer had acquired the painting together from Kelekian. This is also confirmed by the fact that the photo folder (http://boehler.zikg.eu/wisski/navigate/251616/view) contains the words "Trio No 4212" in the upper left corner. The "Trio" was an association of the three mentioned players (Kunsthandel AG, Koenigs and Cassirer), who often carried out joint purchases and sales of artworks.
Published in b/w as Der Kürbis (1920) in Adolph Basler, Henri Matisse, Leipzig: Klinkhardt und Bierman, 1924 (Series: Der Junge Kunst, Band 46;, not paginated) with photo credit: "Photo-Galerie Flechtheim, Berlin.".
Sold by Kunsthandlung Böhler group to Alfred Flechtheim (1925)
Sold by Flechtheim to Max Meirowsky , ca. 1931, as per the following provided by Dr. Ute Babick-Krueger (Dresden 2013):
“In the papers of the Thannhauser Gallery, kept with the ZADIK in Cologne, there are index cards to be found, on which the visits of Thannhauser's customers were noted and which also provide detailed background information on works of art, offered through them. One of that index cards is dealing with a visit from Max Meirowsky at the Gallery on 30 March 1931 (ZADIK: signature A077-XIX-022-0094-004). A note in it says: "Now (he - Meirowsky) has bought Still life with melon from Flechtheim."That the information actually referred to [RISD] your painting becomes clear when studying another index card from the ZADIK Thannhauser collection (ZADIK signature: A077-XIX-016-0041-044): On 2/15/1931 a visit from Flechtheim to the gallery is noted down and it says: "He (Flechtheim) says that he has sold his two Matisse, the Still life with Pumpkin and the Flower Festival in Nice."
Brought to Switzerland by Meirowsky where it remained in his collection until his death in 1949. Placed on loan by Meirowsky’s executors the Museum of Art and History, Geneva, in early 1950; ( see Brigitte Monti in https://issuu.com/ville-ge/docs/pdf_genava_web_16_mb-test).
Sold by Meirowsky's executors in 1952 to benefit a trust established to develop farming in Israel.
Acquired in 1952 by Wildenstein and sold to Mrs. Murray S. Danforth, Providence, in 1953. Gift to the RISD Museum from Mrs. Murray S. Danforth, 1957.
