René Santos

Here René Santos used cool tones to depict what appears to be a domestic scene, meticulously adding vertical lines in red colored pencil across the composition. Santos was one of the first Puerto Rican artists to show his work in Venice during the biennale, but his career was cut short by his premature death due to AIDS-related complications. He often sourced the images of his work from popular media, using juxtaposition, repetition, and sometimes text to explore their politics. In stark contrast to revelation, however, Santos here uses line to make the drawing more ambiguous.
