About
This stylized marble head of a woman is an interpretation of classical form that reflects Nadelman’s admiration for ancient sculpture. Its faint smile, angled neck, coiled braid, and smooth, generalized features relate it to Greek heads he had studied at the Louvre.
Nadelman’s early patrons in Paris and London included collectors Leo and Gertrude Stein and the cosmetics entrepreneur Helena Rubenstein. After he immigrated to New York he also won the interest of RISD’s president, Eliza Radeke, who became one of his first supporters in America.
