This sculpture reflects shifts in representation as Buddhism spread from the Indian subcontinent to Thailand. As Indian culture was imported to Thailand through Buddhism and sea trade, Dvaravati Empire artists became the first to create Buddhist imagery that was clearly distinct from Indian prototypes. The larger mouth with thick lips, the thin, raised eyebrows, and the hair defined in small blocks characterize sculpture made during the Dvaravati Period.
