European Galleries

A plastic bear morphing into a bat pursues a monster rendered in fabric, mirror shards, beads, and rough paint strokes. De la Vega’s fantastic figures evoke the physical transformations of vampires and prompt consideration of their powers of seduction and destruction.

The artist’s use of found objects and sculptural materials reflects his emergence as part of the Otra Figuración (Other Figuration). In the 1960s, this Latin American art movement sought to expand the formal and structural possibilities of painting amidst—and in response to—the political turmoil prevalent in Argentina at that time.
