Modern and Contemporary Galleries

In this exuberantly constructed still-life painting, thick, slashing brushstrokes define a tabletop laden with lemons, a lute, and a profusion of platters. Hartigan appropriated the traditional still-life motif and reinvigorated it as an example of mid-20th-century abstraction.

Hartigan’s composition was inspired by Henri Matisse’s Still Life after Jan Davidsz. de Heem’s “La Desserte” (1915), a painting exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in 1951. Matisse had studied de Heem’s lavish and meticulously drawn dessert table, freely reconstructing that 17th-century Dutch painting.
