Lively floral motifs and animals signifying good fortune, longevity, and prosperity cover these Korean chests in brilliant colors and vivid patterns. Constructed from panels of flattened oxhorn that were ground, polished, and then painted using a technique known as hwagak, they were probably made for a wealthy member of the upper class.

These boxes were gifted to the RISD Museum by philanthropists David and Peggy Rockefeller. They once belonged to David’s mother, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, who bought them in 1926 from the Boston branch of the Asian art dealer Yamanaka & Company, then displayed them in her home in Maine.
