Facing Artists

February 27 - July 31, 2009

Alfonso Ossorio, who was inspired by both the detailed paintings of the Northern Renaissance and the anxious, dream-like imagery of the European Surrealists,
created this portrait of actress Ida Lupino (American, 1918–1995) just after serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. We do not know the circumstances for
his unusual portrait. Perhaps Ossorio was simply a fan of Lupino’s films, in which she played the tough leading lady alongside such actors as Humphrey Bogart and
Edward G. Robinson.
