Inro are small, often lacquered cases, generally of three to five sections, that were originally used for holding seals and seal inks. Exclusively worn by men, they became popular during the Edo period for holding exotic medicines being imported mostly from China. The inro is connected by a cord to a netsuke or manju, which served as a toggle for hanging the inro from a man’s obi or sash.
