Painterly Prints in Nineteenth-Century Japan

June 1 - September 23, 2007

The five prints by Sadanobu II on this wall may have been conceived as a set because of their similarity in size and theme. This flowering tree has been identified as aronia (kaidō), but on the basis of its drooping, slender branches and serrated leaves, it might also be plum (ume). There is a classic literary association between the first song of the Japanese bush warbler (uguisu) and the plum, which together indicate the New Year.
