Exhibition History

Painterly Prints in Nineteenth-Century Japan
Jun 01, 2007 – Sep 23, 2007

Label copy

The five prints by Sadanobu II on this wall may have been conceived as a set because of their similarity in size and theme. There is a classic literary association between the Japanese bush warbler’s (uguisu) first song and the plum (ume), which together indicate the New Year.

Label copy

Like Pheasant on Snow-Covered Pine Tree by the same artist, this print shows the influence of the popular Kyoto-Osaka painting style of the time. The asymmetric composition emphasizes surface beauty and design, yet a real sense of the expanse of space blurring with snowfall and the clear cry of the bird, as well.
