Making It In America

October 11, 2013 - February 9, 2014

Enameled silver wares were very popular at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where the Gorham Manufacturing Company was awarded seven awards for their enamel work. Many pieces were designed in a Renaissance Revival style, such as this jewelry box featuring an alfresco feast. Gorham hired Hungarian artist G. de Festetics to create designs that were executed by a predominately American and female team of enamellers.
