Facing Artists

February 27 - July 31, 2009

Joseph Breitenbach’s diverse body of work includes portraiture, nudes, and surreal compositions. This candid shot of Josef Albers (American, born Germany,
1888–1976), one of the most influential art teachers in the United States at the time, shows him working with students on one of his renowned color theory
assignments. Albers brought his exercises from the Bauhaus, the innovative German art and design school, to Black Mountain College in North Carolina, which,
under his direction, became a breeding ground for creativity in mid-century America. Albers was also a renowned painter, a side of his achievement that Karsh
highlights in his portrait in the adjacent gallery.
