The peony flowers during the months of May and June. It is one of the plants of the four seasons and is associated with summer. The peony was introduced into Japan from China in the 8th century and was esteemed not only for its beauty, but also for its medicinal qualities. It was first used as a decorative pattern before being adopted as a family crest. It is also associated with mature women and erotic love, as are climbing flowers, including the clematis.
