Exhibition History

Indian Art for the RISD Collection
Aug 23, 1985 – Mar 09, 1986

Label copy

The adventures of Krishna with the local milkmaids or gopis in the sacred land of Braj on the Jumna river near Mathura became a central image in Hindu devotional poetry. Radha is the most important gopi whose love for Krishna became a metaphor for the soul's search for union with the divine. Krishna's childish pranks and youthful exuberance in these episodes were an important factor in this god's phenomenal popularity.
