A Celebration of the New Year in Japanese Woodblock Prints
Jan 01, 1990 – Mar 01, 1990

Label copy

Karuta, a card game which requires players to match correct poem cards (from the collection of poems, Ogura hyakunin isshu or "One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets") to the verse recited by the reader, is a traditional New Year's pastime. The print creates a visual dialogue between the cards representing verses by Emperor Koko and Lady Sei Shonagon and the verse printed in the upper left.
