Tradition and Innovation in American Watercolors

January 27 - April 11, 1999

Marin spent many years visiting the Maine coast, where he pushed his medium in response to the rugged characteristics of the landscape, using sharp, overlapping layers of wash and dry strokes of color. Here, Andrew's Island offers a site from which to observe an angled wedge of sea and the deep blue contour of another island beyond. In 1923, Marin became actively involved in carving and painting his own frames as integrated decorative environments for his work.
