Decker was a local tradesman and artist who gave lessons in painting with oil and watercolor. This view depicts the bustling rail terminus between Fox Point and India Point at the base of Hope Street.

Picturing Providence 1790-1930
Jul 17, 1992 – Aug 29, 1992

Label copy

In 1873 the Merchants and Miners Transportation Company opened the Providence, Norfolk and Baltimore Steamship Line and ran it from Lonsdale Wharf. This location on India Street at the foot of Hope Street provided connection for steamers to the railroad lines which ran along India Point. It is likely that this detailed rendering of the wide variety of transportation modes available at Lonsdale Wharf was commissioned by the company as the basis for an advertisement.
