Ivory was carved throughout many regions of India, where in the 17th century elephants still roamed wild in many of the jungles. This sensitive evocation of two lovers in an open pavilion orginally formed part of a door containing at least three other similar panels. Such imagery is common in both religious and secular contexts in India.
