Man Singh ruled over the desert state of Marwar from the spectacular fortess of Jodhpur at a time when the British were starting to make their presence felt in Rajasthan. After ascending the throne in 1804 he continued to maintain close ties with a series of Hindu holy men, of of whome he credited with saving his life during the bloody internecine struggles that preceeded his rise to power.
