Exhibition History

Facing Artists
Twentieth Century Portraits from the Collection
Feb 27, 2009 – Jul 31, 2009

Label copy

Painter, filmmaker, theorist, and writer Hans Richter shot this portrait of fellow Dada artist Marcel Duchamp (French, 1887-1968) during the filming of 8x8, a nonsensical performance of characters playing the roles of chess pieces shot in Southbury, Connecticut. The title seems to reference Botticelli’s Birth of Venus,

but it also alludes to Duchamp’s play with gender roles, best known in his enactment of his female alter ego, Rose Sélavy.
